Spam, Spam, Green Ham (but no eggs…)

Parents Should Be Concerned

Your daughter would tell you if someone propositioned her on-line. Right? Maybe not. Thirty percent of girls recently polled by the Girl Scouts of America reported that they had been sexually harassed in a chat room, but only 7 percent told their parents. Children are often afraid to report such incidents, fearing that their parents might completely ban their computer usage.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that one in five children who use the Internet have received sexual solicitations in the last year. The FBI estimates that 45 million children will go on line in 2002. Molesters find it easy to find and communicate with children over the Internet.

Can you watch every move your children make while on the computer? Of course not. Good parents do monitor what their children do while on-line, but you can't always be looking over their shoulders.
